Brewarrina Aboriginal Fish Traps
Baiame's Ngunnhu is the Aboriginal name for a fish trap complex on the Darling
river in Brewarrina. It was interesting to drop by and visit to marvel at the
ingenuity of its design. Fish were herded into various dry-stone rock weirs
and holding pens and then subsequently caught as they migrated along the
river.
Unfortunately over the period of colonisation, the traps were dismantled in areas and used for building construction. Despite the years of damage and weir construction, the remains of this structure are clearly evident in the river.
Bird lovers would enjoy this place, there are plenty of them ! No doubt the birds are still enjoying the benefits of the trapping structures for an easy feed.
