Get wrecked on Great Keppel Is
Back in 1983 I visited Great Keppel Island. The catch cry slogan was "Get
wrecked on Great Keppel Island". Times have changed, what has changed ? I had
to visit to find out.
Quite honestly, I barely remember what it was like in 1983. I was in my early
twenties, backpacking, drinking and eating cheaply. I managed that by camping
and eating hamburgers and the best hamburger joint on the planet. The
hamburgers are still made their albeit in a better venue and with a lesser
range than what was available.
Seek out Tropical Vibes if you are interested. You might be lucky to meet one
of the early workers there too.
I did recall an upmarket resort. The resort is there, but no longer upmarket.
There is a fence around the delapidated ruins, but there are openings that
allowed access by inquisitive tourists.
Aside from delapidated resorts, hamburger shops and other man-made artefacts,
Great Keppel island is a pleasant place to explore on foot.
It has many lovely beaches and coves to swim in.
As well, there is a historic homestead on the island and some goats left
behind from that era.
I stayed at a budget friendly Great Keppel Island Holidays accommodation.
(ring to get cheaper rates than booking agents.) The place served its purpose
and had the added benefit of having a kitchen where you could cook your own
food. I mixed that option with the occasional feed at other venues.
The island has quite a few interesting animals to delight, for instance this
echidna:
As well as this stone-curlew, who thought it would be invisible if it stood
very still.
I am glad I came to revisit that memory from long ago. I am glad not to see it
from drunken eyes and a more mature outlook. Walking and kayaking meant I got
a better perspective from something that is of more value to me and that is
mother nature.
